FACTS

  • Location: Ciudad Perdida is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, near Santa Marta on Colombia's northern coast.  

  • Rediscovery: Although known to local indigenous peoples, the city was rediscovered in the 1970s after being looted for its gold and artifacts in the 1980s.

  • Trek Duration: Most visitors do a 4-day trek to the site, though shorter and longer versions are available. The trek is physically challenging, crossing rivers and navigating muddy terrain.  

  • Ecological Efforts: The Colombian government has implemented measures to protect the site from further looting and environmental degradation, including strict regulations that require licensed guides.
