The area spans approximately 330 square kilometers in the northern part of the Huila department. The name "Tatacoa" was given by the Spaniards who explored the area in the 16th century and named it after a local snake. The desert is divided into two main areas: El Cuzco with its red sandstones and Los Hoyos with its gray clay formations. Tatacoa is one of the best places in Colombia for stargazing due to the minimal light pollution. There are natural pools in the desert, such as the Piscinas de Los Hoyos, where visitors can cool off. There are numerous fossil remains and petrified trees that provide insights into the region's rich prehistoric past. The average temperature in Tatacoa is about 28°C, but it can rise to over 40°C during the day.
