In the spectacular Tatacoa Desert, the second largest arid region in Colombia after the Guajira Peninsula, we explore two well-known parts of this tropical dry forest. The Cuzco area is characterized by its ocher-colored landscape, reminiscent of scenes from cartoons featuring the Roadrunner and the Coyote. In the Los Hoyos area, the environment shifts to gray tones, offering unique panoramic views. Along the way, there are stops for short walks to admire formations created by water and wind, locally known as cathedrals, the tower, the wishing tree, and the labyrinths. You will also see the typical vegetation of this ecosystem. While passing through the gray area of Los Hoyos, you have the optional opportunity to refresh yourself in a pool situated amidst the idyllic desert landscape (optional).

Millions of years ago, the Tatacoa Desert was a humid tropical forest. The formation of the Eastern Cordillera changed the course of the waterways, creating the current eroded landscape. The small but fascinating Paleontological Museum (included) of Villavieja offers insights into the prehistoric times of the desert and houses a large collection of fossils from various species of mammals and reptiles.

The trip from Neiva to Villavieja takes approximately one and a half hours each way. The entire tour through the "zona roja y gris" (red and gray zones) lasts about five hours, including the visit to the museum, depending on your interest. The time spent at the pool is also flexible and based on your preferences.
