A hidden treasure among mountains, archaeology, waterfalls, and legends in San Agustín, Huila

When talking about archaeological tourism in southern Colombia, most travelers immediately think of the famous San Agustín Archaeological Park. However, beyond the traditional routes lies a little-known place that preserves an authentic connection with nature, ancestral history, and the rural traditions of Huila: the Parque Arqueológico Infantil de la Maternidad.

Located in the village of La Gaitana, in the district of Quinchana, this site offers a different experience for travelers seeking to discover lesser-explored places surrounded by mountains, mist, waterfalls, and ancient trails. The experience combines archaeology, hiking, community tourism, and local legends passed down through generations.

Quinchana: a village full of color and nature

The adventure begins in the municipality of San Agustín, in the department of Huila. The journey to Quinchana takes approximately one and a half hours along rural roads crossing mountainous landscapes, farmland, and impressive views of the upper Magdalena River valley.

Quinchana is a small rural district known for the tranquility of its inhabitants, the natural richness of the region, and its proximity to the majestic Magdalena River, considered one of Colombia’s most important rivers. One of the village’s most striking features is the colorful painted façades of its houses, decorated with animals, birds, and elements representing the local biodiversity.

The region is also ideal for birdwatching thanks to the great diversity of ecosystems found within the Colombian Massif. During the journey, it is possible to hear Andean bird species and admire landscapes covered in lush vegetation and mist.

The path to the Parque de la Maternidad

From Quinchana, the ascent toward the village of La Gaitana begins. The journey to the park can be done on foot in approximately 30 minutes, although some visitors prefer to go by motorcycle or horseback. Currently, there is no road access for cars to the upper part of the site.

The trail crosses humid mountainous areas with cool temperatures, so it is recommended to wear comfortable clothing, rubber boots, or trekking shoes with good grip. It is also important to bring water and some snacks, since there are no nearby stores in the upper mountain area.

As the trail ascends, the views of the Colombian Massif and the mountains of southern Huila transform the journey into an unforgettable experience for nature and adventure lovers.

History and archaeological discovery

The Parque Arqueológico Infantil de la Maternidad is one of the lesser-known archaeological sites of San Agustín, but also one of the most fascinating. The site was discovered around 1942, and archaeological excavations were later carried out in 1946.

At this location, approximately 23 tombs and several stone sculptures related to funerary rituals of the Agustinian culture were found. Among the main sculptures are the Goddess of Motherhood, the Mambero Shaman, and the Medical Shaman.

The park receives the name “Infantil de la Maternidad” because many of the discovered tombs belonged to children and women. This detail has led to different interpretations regarding the spiritual and ceremonial role of motherhood within Agustinian culture.

Today, only part of the site has been excavated. According to local residents and guides, there may still be additional archaeological remains hidden beneath the earth.

Nature, waterfalls, and legends

Very close to the archaeological park are other natural attractions that complement the experience and turn the hike into a route filled with magic and mystery.

Approximately 10 minutes away is the Gotas de Navidad Waterfall, a place famous because when sunlight passes through the water droplets, it creates a sparkling effect similar to a curtain of Christmas lights.

Also nearby is the Duende Waterfall, located around 15 minutes from the park. In this area, local residents tell stories and legends related to apparitions and paranormal events associated with “the duende,” a mythical creature deeply rooted in Colombian rural traditions.

Beyond the legends, the natural surroundings are truly impressive: humid forest, the constant sound of flowing water, trails surrounded by vegetation, and a peaceful atmosphere that is difficult to find in more crowded tourist destinations.

Community tourism and an authentic experience

Visiting Quinchana and the Parque de la Maternidad is also an opportunity to support community tourism and discover a different side of San Agustín. Unlike more commercial destinations, this region still preserves an authentic connection with rural traditions and the countryside lifestyle of southern Huila.

Local guides share stories, ancestral knowledge, and oral traditions passed down from generation to generation, making every visit unique. For many travelers, this experience becomes one of the most memorable moments of their journey through Huila.
