Paragliding in Colombia: One of the Most Extraordinary Flights Between Jungle, Sea, and Mountains

For today’s guest article, a visitor to Mirador Puerto Alto shared an experience he had never originally planned: his first paragliding flight above Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Despite a fear of heights and having absolutely no previous experience, he took the leap and soared between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, tropical rainforest, and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. In this personal account, he explains why the flight was much more than just an adventure and why Puerto Alto became one of the most extraordinary places he experienced in Colombia.
Paragliding at Mirador Puerto Alto: Soaring Between the Sierra Nevada and the Caribbean
I had never actually planned to take the flight.

Originally, I simply wanted to spend a few days at Mirador Puerto Alto.
To enjoy the peace and quiet.
The views of the Caribbean and Tayrona National Park.
To disconnect for a while between the Sierra Nevada, tropical nature, and the long sunsets up there.
And then I suddenly saw the first paragliders.
Tiny shapes somewhere above the coastline.
Almost silent.
Later, other guests told me about their flights, and at some point I thought:
If I ever want to try paragliding, this is probably the place to do it.
There was still one problem:
I had never gone paragliding before.
And I do struggle with a fear of heights in certain situations.

Why Paragliding in Puerto Alto Is Different
Anyone who has spent a few days at Mirador Puerto Alto quickly understands why this place is so well suited for paragliding.
In front of you: the Caribbean Sea.
Behind you: the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
In between: tropical rainforest, cacao plantations, rivers, and wild coastal landscapes.
Mirador Puerto Alto is considered the only place in the region where paragliding flights are regularly offered with this unique combination of Sierra Nevada mountain views and Caribbean scenery.
That is exactly what makes this spot so special.
You do not take off above cities or large valleys.
You launch directly between mountains and sea.
And this scenery already feels almost unreal even from the ground.

The Walk to the Launch Site
From Mirador Puerto Alto, it takes about fifteen minutes uphill to reach the launch site.
The walk is short but steep.
And honestly, I became a little more nervous with every step.
At the same time, the view became more impressive.
Once at the top, you are looking directly over the Caribbean coastline of northern Colombia.
The launch site sits at approximately 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level.
The sea in front of you.
The Sierra Nevada in the background.
And suddenly it becomes very clear:
This is really happening.

Why Pilot Juan Immediately Made Me Feel Safe
Especially on a first flight, the person next to you probably makes the biggest difference.
My pilot Juan, from Medellín, seemed calm from the very first moment.
No rush.
No pressure.
No unnecessary showmanship.
Just the relaxed confidence of someone who has done this countless times before.
Before takeoff, he carefully explained:
The equipment
The flight process
The safety procedures
Takeoff and landing
And surprisingly, that helped a lot.
At some point, I noticed my nervousness slowly fading.
Not completely gone.
But much more manageable.

Perfect Conditions Above the Caribbean Coast
Apparently, we had chosen the perfect day.
Hardly any clouds.
Calm conditions.
And just enough thermal activity to give the wing strong lift almost immediately.
Within a short time, we climbed from around 400 meters to roughly 600 meters (2,000 feet).
As a result, the flight time increased significantly.
In the end, my flight lasted about 30 minutes.
Many flights usually last between 15 and 20 minutes.
And it was up there that I suddenly began to understand why so many people love paragliding.
What Surprised Me Most
Not the adrenaline.
Not the height.
But the silence.
The flight felt surprisingly gentle.
Almost soundless.
No violent turbulence.
No strong jolts.
More like slowly gliding above the Caribbean coastline.
And at some point, I realized I had completely forgotten to be nervous.
Below us were:
Tropical rainforest
Cacao plantations
Small rivers
The coastal landscapes around Buritaca
The Caribbean Sea
In the distance stood the Sierra Nevada.
This combination of mountains and ocean looks almost surreal from the air.
For a brief moment, everything felt very far away.
And that was probably the exact moment when nervousness turned into genuine fascination.

The Landing Was Much Easier Than Expected
I was also nervous about the landing.
In the end, it was surprisingly calm.
We landed gently in a grassy field not far from the beach.
No hard impact.
No stress.
Afterward, I took a motorcycle taxi back toward Mirador Puerto Alto.
Walking back would also have been possible and takes around 30 minutes.
Would I Do It Again?
Absolutely.
Looking back, I can hardly imagine a better place for my first paragliding flight.
Not only because of the flight itself.
But because of this combination of:
The Caribbean.
The Sierra Nevada.
The rainforest.
The tranquility.
And that unique perspective between mountains and sea.
When I think back on the experience today, I remember the feeling far more than the height.
The feeling of silently floating above one of Colombia’s most extraordinary landscapes for half an hour.
