During an inspection trip through the Colombian Amazon, our colleague had the opportunity to experience firsthand some of the destinations, accommodations and community based tourism projects that we recommend to our travelers. Beyond the breathtaking landscapes, it was the encounters with Indigenous communities, the extraordinary biodiversity and the immersion in the rainforest that made this journey truly unforgettable.

In this short travel diary, she shares some of the experiences and moments that left the greatest impression on her while exploring one of Colombia's most fascinating regions.

Discover the Amazon: An Experience That Changes You

The adventure begins in the Amazon Trapezium, where Colombia, Brazil and Peru meet. From the very beginning, you will explore both the town and the surrounding rainforest, discovering one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Along the way, you will also have the chance to taste seasonal Amazonian fruits such as copoazú, arazá and Amazon pineapple, along with many other local delicacies.

One of the Amazon's greatest treasures is its community based and regenerative tourism. Indigenous families welcome visitors into their ancestral lands to share their worldview, their deep connection with nature and the traditional knowledge that has helped protect the rainforest for generations. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy traditional dishes inspired by the chagra, the ancestral Amazonian farming system that combines food production with the preservation of both culture and the forest. Meals prepared with freshwater fish, fariña, plantains, tucupí, cahuana and Amazon chili offer an authentic taste of the region.

Exploring the rainforest also includes short journeys along the Amazon River by either shared or private boat. One of the most memorable experiences is spending the night in a treehouse high above the forest floor. Surrounded by birdsong and sustainable architecture that blends seamlessly into the natural environment, it is an experience unlike any other.

Another highlight is the Calanoa Nature Reserve, where you can walk through the rainforest alongside a local Indigenous interpreter who shares stories, traditions and knowledge about the plants and wildlife of the forest. Here you will also encounter the majestic ceiba tree, a sacred symbol known as the "Tree of Life" and one of the great icons of the world's tropical rainforests.

The journey continues to Puerto Nariño, affectionately known as the "Nativity Scene of the Amazon." This charming village is entirely free of cars and invites visitors to slow down and enjoy its peaceful atmosphere. From there, you will travel to the Tarapoto Lakes, one of the best places to observe the famous pink and gray river dolphins. The area is also home to an extraordinary variety of birdlife, flooded forests and spectacular landscapes that inspire quiet reflection and a deep connection with nature.

The Amazon is a remarkable destination where the mighty river connects the borders of Colombia, Brazil and Peru. It can be visited throughout the year and continually surprises travelers with unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, extraordinary biodiversity and warm encounters with Indigenous communities who generously share their culture, traditions and unique way of understanding the world. More than just a journey, it is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.
