Colombia Trip with a Stroller: Bring It or Leave It at Home?

Whether or not to bring a stroller in Colombia mainly depends on your itinerary. In many cities, good sidewalks quickly alternate with more challenging sections. In Bogotá, loose pavement tiles are even described as a safety risk. In historic centers like Cartagena, streets are often narrow and perfect for strolling, just not always convenient with small wheels. Traveling with a carrier as your main solution and a stroller only as an option is usually the more relaxed approach.

Strollers in Colombia: The Reality on the Ground

Why pushing often turns into carrying

What surprises many families is not just “the one bad sidewalk,” but the constant changes: one smooth block, then stairs, then a curb, then cobblestones again. In Bogotá, loose and unpredictable pavement is considered a real issue for pedestrians. In Cartagena and other colonial areas, narrow and charming streets add to the experience. They are wonderful to explore on foot, but using a stroller there often requires patience.

The impact of a multi-stop itinerary

On a round trip, every bulky item becomes twice as noticeable: car trunks, hotel stairs, boat docks, bus luggage compartments. This is where a carrier clearly wins, because you are not dragging it along, it actually gives you more freedom of movement.

When a stroller makes sense

City days with clear planning

A stroller can be useful on well-planned days in modern areas: parks, promenades, museums, shopping centers. It is especially helpful for naps on the go, as long as you are not constantly dealing with stairs and uneven surfaces.

Short relief for babies

If your baby still spends a lot of time lying down and your accommodation has an elevator and easy access, a lightweight travel stroller can be a helpful addition. Still, it should be seen as a comfort option for selected hours, not as something essential.

When it is better to leave it at home

Nature, sand, and cobblestones

As soon as your itinerary includes farm visits, national parks, waterfalls, or colonial towns, a stroller quickly becomes a limitation. With a baby carrier or a child carrier backpack, you stay flexible, even on narrow, steep, or uneven paths.

Frequent transfers and small vehicles

With longer travel days, changing vehicles, and boat transfers, less luggage is often the biggest stress reducer. Anything that is not truly necessary will cost time and energy along the way.

Our recommended setup for relaxed travel

Plan A: a good carrier

An ergonomic carrier is the most reliable companion in Colombia, especially on stairs, in crowds, and on uneven terrain.

Plan B: a child carrier backpack

For toddlers, a backpack carrier is ideal when trails are narrow, steep, or longer, for example in the coffee region or cloud forest.

If you bring a stroller, keep it ultralight

If you decide to bring one, go for a compact and practical model:

  • easy and quick to fold

  • sturdy enough for cobblestones without being bulky

  • good sun and rain protection

Safety during transfers: car seats and life jackets

Car seat: always request it explicitly

Car seats are not automatically standard in everyday transport and their use is still limited in many cases. Legally, the situation is clear: children under 10 are not allowed to sit in the front seat, and if a child under 2 is traveling only with the driver, they must be secured in an appropriate car seat in the back. For you, this means: always provide age, height, and weight in advance and make sure the correct seat is arranged.

Life jacket: bring a well-fitting one for your child

On tourist boats, safety equipment such as life jackets is required, and in many cases one jacket per passenger is mandatory. Passengers are also clearly instructed to wear them properly. The practical issue is sizing. If you are planning boat transfers or excursions, bringing your own well-fitting child life jacket is often the easiest and most reliable solution.
